Rob,
Nice looking model
That's an interesting mechanism. It doesn't appear the card is warped or distorted
in any way on the downward push against the forces of the elastic band. Am I right
in thinking the U shape piece must give the card support? Otherwise you would
have a depression in the center of the penguin's head at the point of contact.

Yes - the top of the U shaped piece rests inside the top of the head giving he flat surface rigidity.

Is there a way to get horizontal movement from this mechanism as well?
